The Mayor is the chief executive officer of the municipality. They often preside over council meetings and may have the power to hire and fire heads of municipal departments.
Eligibility requirements
A candidate for mayor must meet all eligibility requirements of state law and must have resided continuously in the state for 12 months and in the city for six months immediately preceding the regular filing deadline for a mayoral candidate's application for a place on the ballot. If the mayor ceases to reside in the city, the mayor automatically resigns.

Such application shall clearly designate by number the place on the council to which the candidate seeks election and shall contain a sworn statement by the candidate that he or she is fully qualified under the laws of Texas and the provisions of the city charter to hold the office he or she seeks.
